Administrative Information Systems (AIS)

Patient Management and Administration System (PAS) is a specialised IT system that manages patient information in a hospital setting. This includes patient demographics, appointments, medical records, diagnostic coding and patient tracking (National Health IT Board, 2015). These systems are often based institution-wide and can include financial systems, those specific to certain functions or patient classification systems (Joos, Smith, & Nelson, 2010).

What does this look like "in real life"?

An example of use of an administration system can involve classification systems using patient data to classify patients based on the amount and type of care needed. For example, a patient with second to third degree burns may require 6 hours of professional nursing time within every 8 hour shift. In comparison, a postoperative patient of 3 days from open- heart surgery may only require 2 hours of nursing time per 8 hour shift. This data can now be used to assign staff in a clinical unit (Joos et al., 2010).
